Eckmeier's motivation for this quilt came from the colors and shapes used in Mola designs and motifs by South, Central, and North American Indians. Eckmeier finds the circular format soothing and meditative, just like a mandala. The word "mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit and, loosely translated, means circle.
